Going Places

On this page you will find a selection of other places and activities in the area that may be of interest for the visitor.

1 - Parque Dunar (Dune Park)

Located just west of Matalascañas, there are 3 main attractions here:

- A net of walking trails across the fossil sand dunes and up to the sea cliffs.
 - The Sea Museum where you can see an interesting exhibition about life,  ecology, history and activities in the near coasts.
 - And the horse riding activities you can arrange with the company Pasodoble located also at the Parque Dunar.
There is also bike renting service.

The Information Centre just at the entrance of the Dune Park is a good source of information and they will help you with the bookings.

 2 - Beaches

These are said to be one of the last unspoilt beaches in Spain. There are some 30 kms of white sandy beaches from Matalascañas to Sanlúcar de Barrameda, all along the National Park shores and another 20 kms west of Matalascañas up to Mazagón.

In both coastal resorts you will find all kind of services, specially in high season which starts normally from Easter.

The beaches are open to visitors but restricted to motor vehicles. You just have to walk for a few hundreds meter, even in high season, to get a long stretch of beach for your own.

 3 - La Rábida

West of Doñana, we find an area where is concentrated most of the historic heritage related to the events that led to the Discovery of America. In La Rábida Complex you can visit some of the most important:

 - La Rábida Monastery where Cristopher Columbus himself is said to have found refugee and advise from the monks.
 - The Carabelas Pier where you can visit the reproductions at a real scale of the famous ships.
 - The Celestino Mutis Botanic Garden

 4 - Palos - Moguer

These are two beautiful white villages that have much to do with the events taken place in 1492. Walking through their narrow streets  full of churches, palaces and monasteries is a placer for our senses. In Moguer you can also visit the Museum of Juan Ramón Jimenez, a famous Spanish poet.

 5 - Niebla

One of the best preserved old cities in the region. A visit to its old city centre, walls and castle is worth it. Besides it holds the most spectacular Lesser Kestrel colony in the region.

6 - Cañada de los Pájaros

This is a sort of small private Natural Reserve where many species of birds are kept in semi-captivity. Here it's easy to see some of the rarest species in the area.

Located a few kms south of La Puebla del Río, off the road to Isla Mayor.

 7 - Rio Tinto Mines
A bit further north you can visit the mines in Rio Tinto. They offer a very complete series of different activities in order to understand the importance in the past of one of the largest open air mines in Europe. The mining museum, the open air mines (some of the biggest in Europe), La Dehesa Necropolis, the English District of Bellavista and the Tourist-mining railway with an itinerary of about 11km are the main attractions there.
