Birds of Doñana

complete lists

The list of birds of Doñana can vary widely depending on the extent of the study area and the parameters used for listing the species. In our case we will offer you a practical list based more on our field experience than scientific studies, including areas of ornithological interest near the Doñana Natural Site, but excluding on purpose a number of occasional and accidental species, whose probability of observation while visiting Doñana is very low. A total of 271 species are listed for Doñana plus another 23 for the nearby region.

We have grouped them into two main groups, a spring list that includes those birds that can be observed from March to September and a winter list that includes those that can be observed from October to February. Every species is categorized with the degree of difficulty of sighting during one of our tours with the help of one of our expert guides. Thus, very difficult or very unlikely to find are associated to the letter D, the unlikely or difficult to the d, probable or easy to the e and very likely or very easy to the letter E.

Spring- Summer ( from march to september )

Spring is one of the best times of year for bird watching in Doñana, not only for the beauty of the environment, but also for the composition of our bird list, which includes a number of species that restrict distribution to southern areas in the continent. A total of 213 species.

Autumn – Winter ( from october to february )

In winter Doñana gets a lot of birds that, coming from central and northern Europe, decide to come down to more southerly latitudes where they find better living conditions. Doñana offer very good birding opportunities and a large variety of waterfowl, raptors and passerines, concentrated in a relatively small and accessible area in a short period of time. A total of 234 species.
